'An injection of recombinant factor VIIa can reduce perioperative blood loss and eliminate the need for transfusion in patients undergoing major surgery'
Recombinant activated factor VII (factor VIIa) can reduce bleeding in patients with coagulation abnormalities. In a randomised trial, Philip W Friederich and colleagues assessed use of this drug in patients with normal coagulation systems who were undergoing retropubic prostatectomy, a surgical procedure associated with substantial blood loss. Patients given an intravenous bolus of recombinant factor VIIa early in the operation lost less blood than those given placebo; few needed transfusion, and no adverse events arose. The investigators conclude that this treatment seems to be an effective and safe way to reduce blood loss during major surgery.
